OpenAI’s Dall-E can only generate square images, and Midjourney charges monthly fee. If you are looking for AI image apps that give you more freedom and still free-to-use, check out Leonardo AI and Playground AI.
Leonardo.AI
You can sign up for Leonardo AI now and get instant access. When I signed up a few month ago, it was still at a limited access mode and I waited a week or two before receiving the access approval.
As a free user, Leonardo gives away 150 credit everyday, depends on the different cost to a variety of options, you can generate around 30 to 50 images with 150 credits, which is enough for me.
Leonardo AI offers many pre-trained modules, as you can see from the screenshot above. You can generate with a prompt or with AI canvas, where you can add mask or erase part of the image and generate the new part seamlessly.
Here is an image we generate with Leonardo AI DreamShaper v6, using the prompt:”woman-with-platinum-hair-in-a-dress-of-ice-flowers-a-beautiful-crown-on-her-head-detailed-face”
The result is stunning, and I actually copy the prompt from a public result. If you want to keep your images private, then go for a monthly paid upgrade for $10, $24 or $48 per month.
Playground AI
You will love Playground AI – it’s completely free to generate 1000 images per day that are open to public, and you can choose $15 per month upgrade to generate 2000 images per day in private mode, or $10 per month to use DALL·E addon that gives you 800 images per day.
Just like other image generators, you can choose create on board (using prompts) or on canvas.
It has been adding many pre-trained modules, when I signed up it didn’t have the RPG 4, Counterfeit 3 and a few other modules. A big kudos to the Playground AI engineers!
Here is the image we generated in Playground AI with the same prompt we used in Leonardo AI: “woman-with-platinum-hair-in-a-dress-of-ice-flowers-a-beautiful-crown-on-her-head-detailed-face”, check out the result:
Different style, but the same stunning! I must say the prompt is outstanding, thanks to the anonymous person who thought about it.
But after carefully lookup, you will see some flaws, like the earbud on the right ear and the eyes are somewhat asymmetric. But these blemishes can be fix in the canvas mode, and the overall image output quality is outstanding.
Playground AI has a unique “App Icons” module that you can generate, App icons or logos. I found it very useful, and I actually generate a logo with it.
So here are my two favorite AI image generation apps, both of them generate stunning images and are constantly adding new modules. In the beginning, just experiment different prompts and learn from the public examples, you will get the hang of it very quickly. I will try Adobe Firefly and Bing Image Creator as well, stay tuned for the update!
